The other side of ‘Jugaad’

I always found jugaad a positive word- especially in India where we have always managed to find a solution by making some ‘jugaad’. Some of the greatest yet simplest innovations have come out of this approach. Even in these COVID times, we have seen some desi innovations as covered in this video by The Better India

Some of these innovations include a milk man or a grocery man using a pipeline delivery have gone viral. We also had an autorickshaw with compartments so that no passenger comes in contact with each other.

All this sounds great. But today I read article which shows the other side of ‘jugaad’- more like how things can be managed by bending the rules. In this Quartz article, we see how Indians have managed to get the vaccines even if they are not eligible.

It makes me sad to read that when government is making efforts to increase the availability of vaccines but few individuals have managed to get themselves vaccinated- all because they had the right set of connections or in other words managed it through a jugaad.
